This document was an attempt to thoroughly cover one of the more unique aspects of the game, namely materia and how you can combine certain ones to make a character all the more powerful. To put it quite bluntly, it failed. Miserably at that. Sure, it had some worthwhile information, but not too much, and, in all honesty, not all of it was 100% correct. Worse still, it was written quite poorly, even by my humble standards. I started writing it some two years ago, and it hasn't been updated in much too long a time. It was a waste, and perhaps I can now change that. This (v5.0) is an attempt to salvage it or at the very least, begin to salvage it. It is a complete rewrite of the entire guide, fixing any and everything that was originally wrong with v4.1, from bad grammar to incorrect information. Hopefully when I am done, not only will I have fixed all the problems the original FAQ was riddled with, but I will have added a substantial amount of helpful information. This guide was written ideally for those who have advanced quite far in the game. Ideally, you should have an intimate knowledge of the game, though, it is not required. As a bit of prepatory for the latter sections, certain notations are used quite deliberately throughout the guide. It serves to both ease my task of writing, and allow for smooth readability. The equal sign (=) is used to denote materia that are linked to each other. [Weapon] denotes that the materia should be placed into a weapon's materia slots. Likewise, [Armor] denotes that the materia should be placed into an armor's materia slots. [Either] denotes that the materia can go into either a weapon or an armor's materia slots. Additionally, some combinations are listed together, because the effects are very similar. This does not neccessarily mean that they should be used together. To distinguish, whenever a [Weapon], [Armor] or [Either] denotation is used, it is the beginning of a new separate combination that has no direct link to another combination. Lastly, it should be noted that all of these combinations were conceived with the materia being maxed out in mind. It is, for the most part, not a requirement, though recommended greatly. I can be contacted at the e-mail address listed at the top of this guide. Take note, that if you are going to send me an e-mail, please fill in a subject line so I know what it is regarding, otherwise it gets deleted as junk mail. Seriously now, I am about as lazy as they come and if I can get my ass to write this entire guide, you had better be able to fill in a subject line. Please do not send me any combinations that are just variations of those listed in this guide. Unless yours is groundbreaking, it is pointless. I know I have not covered everything, but that is, in a way, one of the points of revision 5.0. Readers of older version will notice that I cut quite a many of the advanced combinations because they were basically just a few simple combinations thrown together. Readers should be more than adequately intelligent enough to figure some of them out on their own, so there is no point to list them. Just a waste of space, really. Enough of my rambling... on to the guide. Enjoy. Of course, there are literally dozens of tried and true methods that basically guarantee the defeat of the WEAPONs. So instead of listing methods of defeating them (as you can find that elsewhere), I have made this a section with information on there attacks and attack patterns. However, if you do not want to bother reading the below sections and forming your own strategy, the short answer is: Use Hades on Ruby and have at least one character with very little materia against Emerald (you can actually do it without any materia at all, but I suggest using Double Cut to speed things along). Mystile armor on two characters (as there are only two Mystiles in the game) against both. I myself have managed to take them both down at around level 45. I've not bothered trying any lower simply because I don't have the desire to go through the game for the umpteenth time just to fight the WEAPONs. What's more, I've heard of players who can do it in the 20's (I even downloaded and watched a video that proves it). So they are hardly invincible. +=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+ [3.2] Emerald WEAPON +=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+ ATTACKS ------- Emerald Shoot - Hits everyone for high damage. Emerald Beam - This attack hits everyone for less dmg. than Emerald Shoot. It uses this directly before revealing its "eyes". Revenge Stomp - Each time an eye is destroyed, it will use this. It hits all for low to moderate damage. Aire Tam Storm - The infamous attack. Notice what "Aire Tam" is spelled backwards? Deals damage to all. Damage is directly proportional to the amount of materia worn. For every piece of materia a character has equipped, the damage of Aire Tam Storm is increased by 1100 (or was it 1111? I forget). So if you wear no materia, it does nothing. This is used after all eyes are destroyed. -NOTES- Each eye has roughly 20000 HP. Two of them deal damage normally. The other two take away your MP. ATTACK PATTERN -------------- 1. It uses Emerald Shoot for a short while. 2. After a certain amount of time (or is it damage?) it'll pull out the Emerald Beam. 3. Opens eyes. 4. Each eye destroyed prompts a Revenge Stomp. 5. All eyes destoryed prompts a Aire Tam Storm. 6. Cycle repeats. TIPS AND ADVICE --------------- 1. Emerald causes no status effects whatsoever. Don't bother with the usually essential accessories for other more useful ones. 2. The Mystile armor allows characters to dodge a large amount of attacks. 3. High luck does the same. 4. Emerald is worth tons of AP. Don't bother with Ultimate Weapons. 5. Physical attacks work well on Emerald. +=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+ [3.3] Ruby WEAPON +=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+ ATTACKS ------- Whirlsand - Removes a single character from battle. Great Sweep - Damages all characters for moderate damage. Shadow Flare - Deals damage to a single character. Ignores defense. Ultima - Same as the spell you can cast. It uses it as a counterattack. Ruby Fire - Fire damage to one character. Ruby Ray - Damages one character for low to moderate damage. Can cause confusion. [Regular Attack] - Deals low to moderate damage to one character. -NOTES- Ruby will submerge his claws and two tentacles will appear behind the party. One deals damage directly. The other will take away your MP. each ahs about 50000 HP. ATTACK PATTERN -------------- Ruby likes to fight one-on-one battles. Its priority is always to use Whirlsand until there is only one character left in fighting condition. After there is only one character left, it'll submerge its claws. At this point, it will lose the ability to use Whirlsand, Great Sweep and its regular, generic attack. TIPS AND ADVICE --------------- 1. Physical attacks are worthless against Ruby. They do nearly no damage. 2. The Mystile armor allows characters to dodge a large amount of attacks. 3. High luck does the same. 4. Ruby is worth tons of AP. Don't bother with Ultimate Weapons. 5. Equip the Ribbon to avoid confusion. 6. Ruby is *not* immune to the status ailment "Stop". 4 4 =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= 4444 -----------------------[ ULTIMATE CHARACTERS ]----------------------- 4 =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= 4 +=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+ [4.1] Ultimate Weapons +=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+ With the single exception with Aeris, each character has an Ultimate Weapon in the game. These weapons each have eight total materia slots, divided in four pairs. Though the weapon has absolutely no materia growth, the weapon itself is immensely strong and has certain inherent properties. =====---------------------------------------------------------===== CLOUD STRIFE - ULTIMATE WEAPON ------------------------------ LOCATION: Acquired by defeating the Ultimate WEAPON. In the third disc, use the Highwind Airship to chase Ultimate WEAPON. After a few battles, you'll eventually beat him near Cosmo Canyon. Its defeat nets you Cloud's Ultima Weapon, and allows access to the Ancient Forest without the use of a mountain climbing chocobo. SPECIAL PROPERTIES: Damage is directly affected by HP. The difference between your current HP and max HP affect damage. The more HP you have, the more damage you do. The less you have, the less damage you do. NOTES: Veterans to Final Fantasy will recognize the Ultima Weapon. It has appeared in VI as a weapon and monster (both of which under the translation of "AtmaWeapon". It appeared in VIII as a optional enemy in a remote location. In IX it was Zidane's most powerful weapon. In X it was also a monster (though extremely weak to the point it was laughable). BARRET WALLACE - MISSING SCORE ------------------------------ LOCATION: During the Midgar Raid (directly before the end of Disc 2), you will scale a set of stairs before the battle with Hojo. A green chest is on the stairway. It, obviously, contains the Missing Score. If Barret is not in your party, the chest will not be there, and you will not acquire this weapon. SPECIAL PROPERTIES: Equipping materia with high amounts of AP increase the damage dealt by the Missing Score. TIFA LOCKHART - PREMIUM HEART ----------------------------- LOCATION: Late in Disc 2 or 3, you can return to Midgar. You will be outside of Sector 5. The door is locked, but there is a next to it. Talk to him, and it is mentioned that he dropped a key. Head to Bone Village and dig for "Normal Treasure". Dig near the northern section and you'll eventually come up with the "Sector 5 Key". Go back to Midgar and go to the Wall Market. Enter the building with a vending machine. Examine it and you'll get the Premium Heart. SPECIAL PROPERTIES: Damage is increased as Tifa gets more "Miss" while performing limit breaks. RED XIII - LIMITED MOON ----------------------- LOCATION: Late in Disc 2 or 3, you can return to Cosmo Canyon with Red XIII in your party. Visit Bugenhagen's observatory and after several sequences, you will acquire the Limited Moon. SPECIAL PROPERTIES: Damage is directly affected by MP. The difference between your current MP and max MP affect damage. The more MP you have, the more damage you do. The less you have, the less damage you do. YUFFIE KISARGI - CONFORMER -------------------------- LOCATION: It is in one of the chests in the Shinra's Sunken Gelnika plane. After acquiring the Submarine, head to an alcove near the Gold Saucer shore. Enter the submerged airplane and you'll find it in one of the several chests. SPECIAL PROPERTIES: More damage is dealt against higher level monster. CAIT SITH - HP SHOUT -------------------- LOCATION: During the Midgar Raid at the end of the Disc 2, enter the Shinra tower. On the 64th floor, search the lockers for the elusive megaphone. SPECIAL PROPERTIES: Damage is directly affected by HP. The difference between your current HP and max HP affect damage. The more HP you have, the more damage you do. The less you have, the less damage you do. NOTES: Is it just me, or does the name just blatantly give away the special property? VINCENT VALENTINE - DEATH PENALTY --------------------------------- LOCATION: Late in Disc 2 or 3, place Vincent in your party and using either a chocobo with mountain climbing abilities or the submarine visit Lucrecia in her cave. Later on, visit her a second time, and Lucrecia will give Vincent the Death Penalty and his level four limit break, Chaos. SPECIAL PROPERTIES: Damage dealt is increased as Vincent performs the killing blow on more enemies. NOTES: Just like Cait Sith's weapon, the name of this one gives it away at all. But unlike Cait Sith's HP Shout (whose name totally sucks, IMO), Vincent's weapon has a great name. CID HIGHWIND - VENUS GOSPEL --------------------------- LOCATION: After Cid's Rocket is launched, return to Rocket Town. Talk to the seated old man who enjoyed looking at the rocket several times and he will give you the Venus Gospel. SPECIAL PROPERTIES: Damage is directly affected by MP. The difference between your current MP and max MP affect damage. The more MP you have, the more damage you do. The less you have, the less damage you do. NOTES: I have absolutely know idea where the name "Venus Gospel" comes from. It makes no sense to me, and it doesn't seem to fit the name of a spear. It likewise sounds more like a name for a weapon for Aeris rather than Cid. I would have much preferred the name Gungnir or Aura Lance. "Kain's Lance" or "Highwind Lance" would have been the great, as the two legendary FF figures share the same last name. +=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+ [4.2] Level Four Limit Breaks +=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+ With the single exception with Cait Sith, each character has a level four limit break learned through the use of a manual item, after having already acquired all other limits. =====---------------------------------------------------------===== CLOUD STRIFE - OMNISLASH ------------------------ LOCATION: In disc 2 or 3, return to the Gold Saucer Battle Square and purchase it for 32,000 Battle Points. EFFECT: Attacks for 15 hits total, targeting all enemies, though each hit only effects one enemy. BARRET WALLACE - CATASTROPHE ---------------------------- LOCATION: After the train crashes into North Corel, speak with a woman in one of the tents. She will give you the Castastrophe. EFFECT: Attacks all enemies several times. TIFA LOCKHART - FINAL HEAVEN ---------------------------- LOCATION: After Meteor is summoned, return to Nibelheim and go to Tifa's house. At the piano, play the music from the flashback sequence in Kalm. EFFECT: As the final hit in her limit combo, Tifa causes an explosion to damage the enemy. * Thanks to Sage for informing me when you can acquire Final Heaven. AERIS GAINSBOROUGH - GREAT GOSPEL --------------------------------- LOCATION: If the last two digits of the number of battles you have fought are the same (e.g. 44, 122, 1833, 888), visit the Sleeping Man on the Midgar Continent. You will need to be able to cross a river (i.e. have access to the Buggy or, later in the game, the Highwind Airship). He may give you an item called "Mythril". Head to the Weapon Maker near Gongaga and give him the Mythril. He will give you a choice of two chests. The larger one on the first floor contains a Gold Armlet. The smaller one on the second floor contains Aeris' Great Gospel. EFFECT: Grants the entire party _invincibility_. Easily the most useful of all limits, though, pointless because you don't have her long enough to utilize it (or for most people, even use it!). NOTE: Most people acquire this after Aeris is long gone. Refer to the Character FAQ section later in the guide for a detailed method of acquiring this before you lose Aeris. RED XIII - COSMO MEMORY ----------------------- LOCATION: In Nibelheim, go to the Shinra Mansion's second floor. Open the safe with the combination Right 36, Left 10, Right 59, and Right 97. A battle with Missing Number ensues. After defeating him, you will get the Cosmo Memory manual as battle spoils. EFFECT: Attacks all enemies with a single powerful attack. NOTE: Stardust Ray is a much better limit than Cosmo Memory. YUFFIE KISARGI - ALL CREATION ----------------------------- LOCATION: After completing Yuffie's side quest in Wutai (i.e. getting all of your materia back), return with her in your party. Defeat all the warriors of the Pagoda and you will acquire this as a battle spoil for defeating Godo. EFFECT: Attacks all enemies with a single powerful attack. NOTE: Doom of the Living is a much better limit than All Creation. VINCENT VALENTINE - DEATH PENALTY --------------------------------- LOCATION: Late in Disc 2 or 3, place Vincent in your party and using either a chocobo with mountain climbing abilities or the submarine visit Lucrecia in her cave. Later on, visit her a second time, and Lucrecia will give Vincent the Chaos limit break and his ultimate weapon, the Death Penalty. EFFECT: Lose control of Vincent and he will transform into a demon. He is more powerful than he normally is while in this form. NOTE: Personally, I would have loved if Vincent looked more like Chaos from the original Final Fantasy. That would have been one a great little reference to add in. CID HIGHWIND - HIGHWIND ----------------------- LOCATION: It is found in a Chest in the Sunken Gelnika. EFFECT: Cid calls the Highwind, which drops several missiles at all enemies. Each missile will hit one enemy for damage. +=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+ [4.3] Leveling Up +=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+ Though the action of leveling up is quite simple, as with anything, there are bad ways to do it, good ways to do it, and better ways to do it. The fastest way to accumulate experience is through battling at Northern Cave. Proceed through the cave until you come to a path that is split. Head left and you will encounter another split path. Choose the upper one and you will come across a natural-looking terrain complete with a green pool in the center. There are a variety of monsters here, but there are two of notable exception. =====---------------------------------------------------------===== MASTER TONBERRY --------------- APPEARANCE: This creature should be more than familiar to long time FF gamers. It looks distinctively like a turtle without a shell, draped in a non-descript robe, carrying its ever present lattern and knife. It also sports a very fashionable golden star over its head. It will only appear in battle alone. STATISTICS: It takes five hits at max damage to kill. Upon defeat, it awards you 6000 experience points, 200 AP, and 6800 gil. Stealing nets you an Elixir (very important, read on), and morphing nets you a very useful Ribbon accessory. Additionally, it drops a Megalixir as battle spoils. ATTACKS: Everyone's Grudge is a counterattack in which the damage dealt is in direct proportion to number of kills the character has made. Knife is an instant death attack. Master Tonberry is only able to use this attack if its moved close enough to your party. MAGIC POT --------- APPEARANCE: The name gives it away. Looks like a pot or jug with a purple creature's head peering over the rim of the pot. Will appear along or in a group of two. STATISTICS: Takes one hit at max damage to kill. Each one is worth 8000 exp. points, 1000 AP (!), and 8500 gil. As battle spoils, it gives you Turbo Ethers. ATTACKS: As a counterattack, everytime you hit it, it will steal an item. Defeat it to reclaim your item. NOTES: The Magic Pot is initially invunerable. Meaning you cannot harm it in anyway. That is, until you feed it an Elixir. Following that, it loses its innate invunerability. =====---------------------------------------------------------===== Given the information, it should adequately obvious what to do. Anytime you encounter a Master Tonberry, steal the Elixir and kill it. Anytime you encounter a Magic Pot, feed it an Elixir and kill it. +=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+ [4.4] Materia Growth +=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+ Like with experience, there are ways to gather AP and then there are better ways to gather AP. The best place to do it is conveniently the same place where you acquire experience. Equip weapons with higher than normal growth rates. Cloud and Cid are the only two characters with Triple AP growth weapons (the Apocalypse and Scimitar, respectively). Most other characters have a Double AP growth weapon. Additionally, equip Rune Armlets with all characters as they are the only armor with Double AP growth. Fight the same enemies as with leveling up, but look for another enemy as well. =====---------------------------------------------------------===== MOVER ----- APPEARANCE: Again veterans of FF will recognize this. Looks like an orange bouncing ball. Appears in groups of three. STATISTICS: Each takes one hit at max damage to kill. Defeating one is worth 800 AP and 30,000 gil. So, according to simple math, each battle with Movers nets 2400 AP and 90,000 gil. ATTACKS: Only uses a generic physical attack. =====---------------------------------------------------------===== Fighting these guys is a materia maxers dream come true. Every battle with them nets 2400 AP (before considering double and triple AP growth) and it only takes one Slash-All to end the battle. +=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+ [4.5] Stat Maxing +=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+ The Gelnika was a military cargo plane for Shinra. For some reason (it is never explained why), the Gelnika was sunk at some point during the game. It currently resides on the ocean floor in an underwater alcove, accessable through the use of a submarine. The Gelnika is a point of special interest for two reasons. First and most obvious, it is full of many useful treasures. Secondly, more importantly, though less obvious, are Shinra's freak monsters. Not only are the various monsters useful to develop against, they provide the key to making all of your characters nigh-invincible. Each monster can be morphed into a different type of source. As you should undoubtedly know by now, a source permanently raises a statistic by one. Basically, you can continue to morph these monsters into sources and use them to power up your characters to your heart's content. There are six statistics you can power up in this manner to 255. Of course, there are conveniently six monsters to morph. They are: - Unknown 1 ~ Power Source - Unknown 2 ~ Guard Source - Unknown 3 ~ Magic Source - Bad Rap ~ Luck Source - Poodler ~ Speed Source - Serpent ~ Mind Source Of course, being that these monsters are relatively difficult, morphing is not always the most easy of task. You should start off in the cooridor directly to the left of the main hall (where you encounter the Turks if you came here before raided Midgar). here you'l only encounter groups of Bad Raps and Poodlers. Equip Yuffie with her Conformer weapon, the Morph materia, and the Mega-All materia. She should go into battle and continue to use Morph. If your Yuffie deals max damage with morph then you'll be able to kill entire groups in one hit. Now, go to the other areas and max out the rest of your stats. If you can deal max damage with Morph, it will require no more than two hits to kill each monster. Additionally, there are other monsters that can be morphed into sources. I am not going to bother to listing them here because I find it faster and easier to acquire the sources all within the Sunken Gelnika. After you have finished this painstakingly long task, you can sit back, and know your characters are basically unstoppable. 5555 =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= 555 -------------------[ FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ]-------------------- 55 =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= 555 +=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+ [5.1] Gameplay Questions +=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+ Q. What is Lucky 7's? A. If a character's current HP is 7777 exactly, the character will go into a continous attack pattern where he or she attacks 62 times non-stop uninterrupted by enemy or ally actions. Each attack does 7777 damage. This means, when you get this, you do a total of 482,174 damage. Q. How do I get it? A. Well, you can always get it randomly, but here's a much easier method: First, your max HP must be above 7777. Now go into battle with less than this amount, preferably against one enemy. Have the enemy hit you until the last two digits in your HP are close to 77, but higher. Then cast "Mini" on the enemy. It'll hit you for 1 HP everytime. When it does enough damage so that you are at 77 HP exactly, kill the enemy and end the battle. Now use Potions and Hi-Potion until your HP is 7777 exactly. Go into the next battle, and voila. Oh, and no, you cannot carry this affect into another battle, after using it. On a final note, I've heard that some people have actually been able to get some characters' max HP to 7777 exactly (through the use of materia equipping. I've not seen it myself, so I cannot confirm this. ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ Q. What is the Nibelheim safe combo? A. You can only get this by morphing the enemy called "Ghost Ship". It looks like a big wooden shipped with a leg-less skeleton mounted to the bow, holding a big paddle. It can only be found in the Underwater Reactor (in a long glass passage way) and the Battle Square in Gold Saucer. I have personally always done it in the Underwater Reactor, and have never tried to morph it in the Battle Square. ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ Q. How do I perform the item duplication? A. Please take note that this is a cheat. If you would rather not cheat, do not do this. It requires the W-Item command materia. You can only duplicate items that can be used in battle. Go into battle, and choose W-Item. Pick the first item (doesn't matter what it is). With the second item, choose something you wish to duplicate. Then cancel it. That item has just been duplicated. You can keep selecting and cancelling until you've had enough. +=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+ [5.2] Materia Questions +=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+ Q. Some materia is one-of-a-kind, like KotR. How do you get more than one of them? A. When you master a materia (i.e. acquire enough AP to the point where said materia can not grow anymore), a new materia of the same type will be born (i.e. a new materia of the same type will appear in your materia screen starting with no AP). When this happens, you'll get a message in the screen after battle where experience accumulation is shown. Of course, you'll still keep the old mastered materia. Q. What happens when a new materia is born, but you have no space in your materia inventory? A. I've never had that personally happen to me. I've actually never even thought of this possibly until now. I'm sorry, I can't answer that. I normally make it a routine habit to sell off lots of materia at a time. ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ Q. How do I get Master Magic/Master Command/Master Summon? A. Once you have mastered all the materias of the specific group, you can go to Bugenhagen's laboratory and check the corresponding Huge Materia. You'll get the chance to trade in all the mastered materias of one type in for a single Master Materia of that type. Of course, you'll lose all of the previously mastered materias, but you gain a single more powerful materia. Master Command is slightly different. You only need seven, namely Deathblow, Manipulate, Mime, Morph, Sense, Steal and Throw. Additionally, you can defeat Emerald WEAPON and receive the Earth Harp. You can trade it for one Master Magic, one Master Summon, and one Master Command. (Though, normally, if you are able to defeat Emerald, you probably already have a Master Materia or two) Q. Why doesn't the Master Command include all of the Command Materias? A. Because some of them cannot co-exist at the same time. An example would be Double Cut and Slash-All. They both take over the Fight command, and thus cannot both be used by the same character at the same time. Q. Why isn't there a Master Independent Materia or a Master Support Materia? A. A Master Independent Materia cannot exist because it is way too cheap. Imagine a materia that has the properties of HP Plus, MP Plus, Speed Plus, Magic Plus, Long Range, Counter Attack and more. Likewise for the Master Support Materia idea. A single materia being able to add all the properties of All, MP Turbo, MP Absorb, HP Absorb, Added Cut, Element, Added Effect, Sneak Attack, Final Attack and more would make things way too complicated. +=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+ [5.3] Character Questions +=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+ Q. How do I learn new limit breaks? A. Most characters have a total of 7 limit breaks. Cait Sith and Vincent are the exceptions to this, so we'll ignore them for the moment. Of the seven, they are broken down into groups of twos divided over four levels. The last level has only one limit break, and that is learned in a different manner than the rest, so we will ignore that for now, as well. Each character starts with the first limit break in the first level. The second limit break in the first level is acquired through using the first limit break a certain amount of time. Basically, just use the first limit break until you get the second one. This is true for all the levels. The second limit break in the second level is acquired by using the first limit break in the second level a certain amount of times. The second limit break in the third level is acquired by using the first limit break in the third level, as well. Now, to get the first limit break in another level (effectively opening up that level), the character has to perform the killing blow on a certain amount of enemies. Basically just have a character get the killing blow on enemies until they learn the first limit break in the second level, and the first limit break on the third level. Now, because of this system, sometimes people manage to get the first limit break in all levels before they ever get a second limit break for any particular level. This really doesn't matter at all. As long as you use a limit break enough, you'll eventually get the other limit breaks. As for the final limit break, the level four, you have to first acquire an item for each character. All, save Cait Sith, have a limit break manual you can acquire through the course of the game or through a side quest. After you have the item, make sure the corresponding character has learned all six (or in Vincent's case, three) other limits. Then go to the Item screen and use the manual. Now, onto Cait Sith and Vincent. Cait Sith only has two limits through the entire game. He starts with his first limit. His second and final limit break is acquire the same way any other character acquires their first level two limit break, by killing enemies. Vincent only has four limit breaks throughout the game. One for each limit level. Basically he follows the same rules as everyone else, but he does not have to bother using his limits a certain amount of times in an effort to gain a second limit for each level, simply because he doesn't have them. ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ Q. What's the point of Aeris' Level 4 Limit Break? A. Now then, people often wonder what is the point to this limit break considering Aeris is dead before you even get the manual. Because acquiring this manual requires you to go to one continent and back, it is widely assumed you cannot acquire it beforehand, because Aeris is dead before you have access to either the Tiny Bronco or the Highwind Airship. Additionally you have to be capable of crossing a river to get this manual, and you cannot cross a river until you have left the continent Midgar resides on. This is simply not the case. After you acquire the Sand Buggy from Dio, you can drive it into Costa De Sol and board the ship. It will automatically take you back to the continent Midgar is on. Moreover, if you drove the Buggy into Costa De Sol, the ship will have taken the Buggy across the ocean for you. Now you can reach the sleeping man, acquire the Mythril, reboard the ship with the Buggy and go to the Weapon Maker. Give him the Mythril, and pick the small chest on the second story. Use Aeris until you have acquired all her limit breaks and then use the manual. Now, I agree, this is one of the most ridiculously troublesome things in the game, because unlike the rest of the characters, Aeris will not be along long enough to put it to good use. There really is no point to Aeris limit break, aside from a feeling of self-accomplishment, of course. It's a shame really, since Great Gospel is far and wide the strongest limit break there is. ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ Q. Who are the best characters? or Which team is the best? A. This is really more an opinionated question than anything. Unlike in older FFs, characters in VII don't possess special abilities aside from limit breaks. Everything is based around the materia system, which leaves all character roughly the same. Since stats are, for the most part, not too diversified, it leaves only two categories to effective critique and compare characters: the limit breaks and their weapons (more specifically, their ultimate weapons). This generally disqualifies Barret, Tifa, Cait Sith, and Vincent. Barret's Missing Score is dependant on a statistic that requires an enormous amount of time. Though, if you are like me, and spent way too much time maxing materia, then the Missing Score is powerful. However, the point is moot, because this is not so for everyone. Tifa's Premium Heart is dependant on how many times you fail during the limit break slots. The weapon is usually very weak in my game (and from what I hear, most other people's games as well). Likewise, not only does her limit not have as many hits as some other characters, it has chances to backfire (though, really, this point is moot because the slots are ridiculously easy). Cait Sith has my vote for worse character. Not only do I personally loathe the character, his limit is terrible. The slot combo where a giant Cait Sith replaces your entire party is possibly the single most idiotic idea there is. One character instead of three? My counting skills aren't the greatest, but that doesn't even make sense. Vincent, though he has a great character design, is terrible in battle. Using his limit causs you to lose control of him, and he doesn't become that much more powerful. Because of this, I often neglect using him, and thus his Death Penalty is often very weak. This leaves Cloud, Red XIII, Yuffie, and Cid. Red XIII is strong, but his limit falls short. The Cosmo Memory is terrible, and even using Stardust Ray, he nets in a total of five hits only. That leaves Cloud, Yuffie and Cid as the three best to make a party. Personally, I'd pick Cloud and Cid no matter what, simply because they both have a triple AP growth weapon. Yuffie has always been in my party simply because I've always used her to morph enemies. However, for discussion's sake, I'll evaluate these three as well. I really shouldn't even bother with Cloud. On top of being a great character, having a great ultimate weapon, and limit break, he is required for most of the game. Yuffie has arguably the best ultimate weapon. Though All Creation is a terrible limit, her level three limits are on par with the best of them. Cid's ultimate weapon is great. If you don't bother using MP draining abilities, he'll always be strong. I can't honestly make a fair enough assessment of the Highwind limit, as it hits too fast for me to count, but overall, Cid's still better than most. Before I get hate mail because I didn't say your favorite character is the strongest, please remember that this is my opinion. ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ Q. Which character do you personally like the most? A. Cid wins this, hands down. It's not even close. Sephiroth takes the glorified number two spot with Red XIII rounding out a close third. Additionally, like I stated above, I personally loathe Cait Sith. I also dislike Yuffie's character as well, but not nearly to the extent of Cait Sith. +=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+ [5.4] Miscellaneous +=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+=-~-=+ Q. How do you revive Aeris? A. You cannot revive Aeris. For those of you who *still* cannot accept this (or grasp the concept), please read Andrew Vestal's well-written essay on the matter. It can be found in Kao Megura's Changes FAQ found at GameFAQs: For those hell bent on making her playable for the rest of the game, use a gameshark. ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ Q. How do I breed all of the chocobos? A. First off, in the end of it all, you will need three stalls in the Chocobo Farm, the Chocobo Lure materia, and quite a lot of Greens. It is prefered to have all the stalls bought out, but not a requirement. You will need a few of the cheapest Greens purchasable from Choco Billy and it is prefered you have a large quantity of Sylkis Greens. They will make your racing life all the more easier. Take note, this will cost you a huge amount of money. Now, go fight Chocobos around Mideel, on the Wutai continent, or near Gold Saucer. Like you did at the beginning of the game, throw the very cheap greens you bought from Billy to keep the chocobos from fleeing. You'll want to have two chocobos, one Great female and one Good male. Kick the rest out. Now go fight Vlakorados found in the grassy areas directly south of Bone Village. You can either steal or win the Carob Nuts from them. You need three. Feed your two chocobos Sylkis Greens. Anywhere from 7-15 is fine. Go to Gold Saucer and race until both have maxed out their rank. Now, make sure to save your game. Then, mate your two chocobos and feed them one Carob Nut. You should get either a blue male or a green male. If you get anything else, reset, and try again. Kick out the good male chocobo, he's useless now. Feed the newborn chocobo 7-15 Sylkis Greens. Go to the Gold Saucer and race until you have maxed out the new chocobo's rank. Save your game. Mate the great female with the new male chocobo. If the male chocobo was blue, hope to get a green female. If the male chocobo was green, hope to get a blue female. If not, reset the game, and try again. Now kick out the great female chocobo, she's useless too. Feed the female chocobo 7-15 Sylkis Greens. Go to the Gold Saucer and race until you have maxed out the female chocobo's rank. As always, save your game. Mate the blue and green chocobos and feed them a Carob Nut. Make sure you get a Black Chocobo, of any gender. If not, reset. Go to the northern most continent, and find the chocobo tracks in the snow. You will only capture weak chocobos, or wonderful ones. Because the game enjoys making your life difficult, you will undoubtedly catch more weak chocobos than wonderful chocobos. Oh well, this is what the every handy trait of patience is for. Catch until you get a wonderful chocobo of the opposite sex of your Black Chococo. Now go to Goblin Island. It is directly northeast of the continent Midgar is located on. Fight Goblins and either steal or win the Zeio Nut from them. You need only one. Go to the Gold Saucer and race both the Black Chocobo and the wonderful chocobo until their ranks are maxed. Save your game. Mate the black and wonderful chocobos and feed them the newly acquired Zeio Nut. You now have a Gold Chocobo. If, by some remote chance, you don't get a Gold Chocobo, reset and try again. That is the last of the chocobos. Just to dispell any rumors (and we all know there are rumors), you cannot acquire a white chocobo, a red chocobo, a silver chocobo or any other type of chocobo, save for yellow (regular), blue, green, black and gold. Likewise, there are NOT any chocobos who can go underwater, under the Midgar Zolom marsh, into space, fly or teleport you to the netherworld where you revive General Leo to kill Dracula and prevent Frankenstein from discovering the Anti-Life equation and wiping out the universe. Q. That's disgusting. Did you realize that your making the chocobos mate their parents?* A. No, I did not. Nor was that a question I wanted to hear asked. _That_ was one thing I could have seriously done without. By the way, I likewise find it disgusting. However, I also find the fact that you noticed quite disturbing, if not equally as disgusting. * And yes, I actually _did_ receive an e-mail asking that question. The only difference was that the sender took it upon himself to get his message across using a wide assortment of explicitives. None too nicely, for sure. ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ Q. What does the "Tissue" do? A. Last I checked, nothing at all. There are several useless items in the game, most notably: - Tissue - 1/35 Soldier - Gambler - Combat Diary - Autograph - Masamune Blade (and no, this not the same sword Sephiroth has) There may be others, but I cannot seriously be expected to remember all of them, right? ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ Q. How can I beat Onyx WEAPON? It's hard. A. Perhaps you should to stop swallowing the mouth wash before going to sleep. It has been proven to cause delusions. There is no such thing as an Onyx WEAPON. If I am not mistaken, the rumor stems from the ability to get a white (or was it silver?) chocobo who can sink underneath the Midgar Zolom marsh. There Onyx WEAPON will fight you, and once you defeat it, you can collect some prize. Knowing how pathetic these rumors are, it probably has something to do with an item that allows you to recruit more supposed hidden characters. There is no such thing as an Onyx WEAPON. There is Ultimate, Diamond, Ruby and Emerald. Then there is the one people have taken to calling Sapphire. It's the one that got its butt thoroughly kicked by the Junon Cannon. Those are all the WEAPONs you see in this game. There are no others. It is kind of interesting actually. I've heard of so many would-be WEAPONs that can be found in FFVII (including one in space), yet I have never heard anyone mention a rumor regarding Omega from FFV. I assume there have been such rumors, I just would have thought they would be more wide-spread. ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ Q. How do I get the hidden ending? A. Huh? There is one ending, and one ending only in Final Fantasy VII. ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ Q. How do I get Sephiroth/Zack/Hojo(!)? A. You can't. The only optional characters you can acquire are Vincent and Yuffie. Everyone else joins as a matter of course. Zack is quite dead, it wouldn't make much sense if he could join your entourage. Likewise, it wouldn't make much sense for Sephiroth to join you either, considering he happens to be the final enemy of the game and the guy who everyone hates. And to the guy who asked me how do you get Hojo to join you: Drugs are bad for your head. Stop using them. ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ Q. Why didn't you reply to my e-mail? A. Well, if you e-mailed me before revision 5.0 (08/04/02), then I never even received the e-mail in the first place. All previous contact addresses have been long defunct. What's amazing is that in the span of two years, only two people have been intelligent enough to find my correct e-mail by checking my more current FAQs. If you've e-mailed me after revision 5.0, then I may not have replied for a variety of reasons. Perhaps I haven't gotten to the e-mail. I check my e-mail very irregularly. Otherwise, it is because of one of the following reasons: - your e-mail was useless to me - you were being a jackass - I am a jackass and didn't feel like answering you =] Seriously, I am a busy guy, and if your e-mail didn't really warrant a reply, I probably will not bother. * * * * * * * * * CREDITS AND SPECIAL THANKS ``````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````` - Sage - Thanks for informing me when you can acquire Tifa's Final Heaven.
